The Waiting Shea Tour

My thoughts/review~

Shea always impresses me with his excellent writing and fast-moving interesting books. I was scared to death to read this “based on true events” ghost novella, The Waiting. However, was glad I did….I mean….glad I read in the the-waitingDAYLIGHT. From the background stories he told me, I was petrified. I will never vacuum again without looking over my shoulder, want to be alone, or want to be ill. I’m learning more things about ghosts and spirits than I ever wanted to know. Am I curious? Yes, probably too much so. It holds my interest to learn of the unknown. Am I scared still? Yes. And I will forever be haunted by this novella. I read The Waiting in one morning session after I woke up one day, because I couldn’t put it down. I HAD to know what was happening as the story progressed. I didn’t eat breakfast that day and didn’t want to go downstairs until Tim and the kids got home.

This book will be either, depending on your mindset, fun for you to read and be a good, cheap investment for a thrill of a read, OR it will scare you to death and make you incense every corner of your house. I loved the characters in Shea’s novel, particularly for some reason, the old woman next door.

There is a ton of back story to this novel so I would be sure to follow this tour if you are interested. He’ll probably divulge some of it in his interviews and several of his guest articles. It was a blast putting this tour together for Shea and talking about this “inspired by true events” novella. I would really love to see this turned into a movie.

Tour and Giveaway~

I hope you enjoy the publicity tour and let us know what you think. Be sure to enter to win!! Giveaways include one (1) signed paperback of Sinister Entity (this is a full-length print novel of Shea’s that includes paranormal and dopplegangers) plus he’s giving away 5 e-books, one of each of his works: Forest of Shadows, Sinister Entity, Evil Eternal, Swamp Monster Massacre, The Waiting. So there will be six (6) winners in all from the tour-wide giveaway. You must do the Rafflecopter provided to enter. It’s already begun and ends on April 28 at midnight and winners will be notified. Look for the Rafflecopter below the schedule!!

the-waitingBASED ON ACTUAL EVENTS…

Clinging to life…haunted by the dead.

Newlywed Cassandra Pagano lies in a state between life and death, her body fed and preserved by the machines at her side. While she struggles, unaware of the world around her, someone waits—a boy. A phantom that appears solid, real, alive. Cassandra’s husband, Brian, sees him in the house, by her bedside, running down darkened hallways. The boy walks without sound, whispers words that can’t be deciphered.

Terror and tension are driving Brian to the breaking point. Why is the boy there, and what does he want with Cassandra…and her fading soul?

Forest of Shadows by Hunter Shea Made My Skin Crawl in Fright! Preparing for Upcoming Spring Releases

Do shadows lurk around the corner of your home? Press against your window, claw at your door? Does evil claim your territory for their own devices? No, well….you’re not having any fun then.  I suggest you get your fix like I did by reading Forest of Shadows by Hunter Shea.

Until you pick up your own copy, or possibly win the giveaway mentioned below, maybe this blog post will entertain you.  Lurking shadows of the night won’t envelope you just from reading this post, BUT if you don’t read it you’ll miss the review of one of the best scary stories I’ve read in years.  Published by Samhain Publishing’s horror line, Shea is one of the best writers currently out there and I don’t say that lightly.

Here’s the synopsis~

forest of shadowsThe dead still hate!

John Backman specializes in inexplicable phenomena. The weirder the better. So when he gets a letter from a terrified man describing an old log home with odd whisperings, shadows that come alive, and rooms that disappear, he can’t resist the call. But the violence only escalates as soon as John arrives in the remote Alaskan village of Shida. Something dreadful happened there. Something monstrous. The shadows are closing in…and they’re out for blood.

AHHHHHHH……right?

Reading Evil Eternal by Shea first, I was not sure what to expect from Forest of Shadows since Evil Eternal is a rip-roaring bloody demonic action adventure.  I know Shea is a big fan of ghost adventures and the paranormal, so I was hoping this was some kind of ghost story I could really settle down and get goosebumps from. I wasn’t disappointed!

Primarily taking place in an extremely remote town in Alaska that is more like a makeshift modern Native American village that belongs to the dump, Shea takes time to develop his characters and the town’s visual details.  But not in any way that makes the story seem slow or going nowhere…in fact, he builds his characters and his suspense like a master professional with just enough alluding paragraphs, chapter endings, and out of nowhere sentences that made me jump out of my seat or my spine tingle.

His verbiage is supreme goodness, his prose so smooth like ghostly vapors, and his foreboding and mystery perfectly ominous and flawless. I was SUCKED right in and couldn’t stop turning the pages. I refused to want to stop reading to do normal tasks such as shower or eat.

His protagonist, paranormal hobbyist John, and his young daughter, Jessica, hail from New York and take up residence in this unlikely outpost based on a ghost hunting tip from a resident intelligent Indian delinquent who has a fancy for the local librarian and unexpectedly encounters a strange phenomena in John’s soon to be home. But this town doesn’t like white folk, or outsiders, and furthermore, doesn’t like its secrets told or history uncovered.

I really enjoyed how Shea was able to write a clean novel, without a lot of crass sex or bloody gore. When he did write some in during the bursting at the seams finale, he did so in a way that shocking and fast-paced.  He was toying so much with my emotions that I barely saw the blood I knew must be there as I was focusing on feeling for the characters.  I won’t give the ending away, but he had me guessing till the last.  It was redemptive and sad all the same, with a message of good vs. evil you won’t want to miss.

He was able to scare the living daylights out of me–had me listening to the creak of my house stairs with more than passing notice and out my back window at night, even walking and looking over my shoulder–by utilizing straight-forward story telling at its finest. If you are a fan of authors who write augur ghost stories, then Shea is a must read and I recommend him highly.

Forest of Shadows has a sequel coming out this Spring from Samhain called Sinister Entity. Shea also has written a novella called The Graveyard Speaks, which is a prequel to the sequel. (Yes, you can laugh at that). To make it more confusing, it’s a sequel to Forest of Shadows, but also a stand-alone and the start of a new series.  The Graveyard Speaks takes place some 13 years after Forest of Shadows ends and one month prior to Sinister Entity.  Shea utilizes one of his most endearing main characters from Forest of Shadows for Sinister Entity.

We’ve got a lot of cool things coming up from Shea, including an interview this month where he divulges more to me than he ever has during an interview. It’s one you’ll want to be on the watch for. We’ve also got reviews and news of these new Spring releases coming up with giveaways on tap!

The Graveyard Speaks Novella (Short Story)~

the-graveyard-speaksThe dark, moaning apparition that rises from the same grave night after night has chased away even the most skeptical cemetery caretakers. Only one ghost hunter has the will to face the unknown, but at what price?

The Graveyard Speaks is your introduction into the mysterious and at times dangerous life of the paranormal’s most powerful spirit explorer. Read it with the lights on, and if you’re brave enough, follow the trail to Sinister Entity. This isn’t ghost hunting you see on TV!

Get The Graveyard Speaks by Hunter Shea FREE on Samhain’s site (www.samhainpublishing.com) this April (or pre-order now), you’ll need to register with the site for free and put in cart for free, but you’ll pay zero…well, because it’s free. 🙂

Sinister Entity~

sinisterentityHow can you escape the ghost of yourself?

The Leigh family is terrified. They’ve been haunted by the ghostly image of their young daughter, Selena. But how can that be, when Selena is alive and well, and as frightened as her parents? With nowhere else to turn, the Leighs place their hopes in Jessica Backman, who has dedicated her life to investigating paranormal activity. Accompanied by a new partner who claims to be able to speak to the dead, Jessica will soon encounter an entity that scares even her. And a terror far worse than she imagined.

Hunter Shea Releases Cover Art for Paranormal Sequel Sinister Entity!

Another Samhain published author also debuted an AWESOME book cover this week. I am loving their graphic art!! Hunter Shea, author of Forest of Shadows and Evil Eternal, will publish a sequel to Forest of Shadows, called Sinister Entity! It won’t be out for a little while, but doesn’t the cover look….well…sinister? Creepy? Alluring in an evil way? What do you think?

Here’s the blub from Publisher’s Weekly about the upcoming book:

In the follow up to the paranormal hit, Forest of Shadows, a young, brash ghost hunter teams up with the ancestor of the world’s greatest psychic-medium to confront a doppelganger that is terrorizing a New Hampshire teen.

If you’re curious and haven’t read the first book yet, here’s the synopsis for Forest of Shadows too:

The dead still hate!

So, what are you waiting for? Forest of Shadows released January this year and is available in paperback and e-book.  Get caught up on it while waiting for Sinister Entity to release.

Available from Samhain: http://store.samhainpublishing.com/forest-shadows-p-6675.html or other places like Amazon, etc.

What I am Reading and Challenge 1 for Spring into Horror Read-a-Thon #SpringHorrorRAT

So I’ve done a few posts about the Spring into Horror Read-a-Thon already, but haven’t even got up my own starting line post yet (which for newbies is a post where after you sign-in and begin your participation you talk about what you’ll be reading during the week)! Really, WAY too many choices for me to choose from and no way I can read them all in a week, no matter how hard I cross my arms, blink, and toss my ponytail over my head ala Dream of Jennie. I’ve got the ponytail, but not the powers.

So we’ve got my own starting line post combined with the TUESDAY READ-A-THON CHALLENGE. You’ll have to read through my ramblings to get to the challenge portion. 🙂 A two for one deal.

Sooooo…right now I’m halfway through a book called Frozen in Time by Marie Symeou. It is in the genre of vampire too, but the foundation of the book is historical in nature, with themes of the Greek Gods and Goddesses, reincarnation, etc. The beginning to me justifies as being scary, because the vampire demon-type lady has a curse on her from a Goddess that makes her eat in a very nasty way things that you don’t want to read about being eaten. That scared me. Plus I have to finish it. And there are vampires…

I am also reading a horror book that is in the editing stages so I can’t talk about that one. Bummer, because it is so good and I can’t wait to tell you about it later in the year. So I am wadding up my sheets in my sleep in the meantime…. 🙂

I started Shadows of Night, Deborah Harkness’ second in her series after Discovery of Witches. Very witchy, very appropriate. Vampires, witches, daemons…I’m reading for review to publisher but I am also enjoying very much (and making too slow of progress I must say).

I am going to also read The Taker by Alma Katsu. I am reading a lot to support authors and do reviews, so this book is for me to read out of enjoyment. If you haven’t heard of this book, it’s not quite horror, but there are immortals and paranormal beings and it’s got a gothic overtone. So I hope it applies. I’ve been waiting awhile to sink into it.

And finally, I just received Hunter Shea’s newest Evil Eternal, which I am going to read for review. Since its horror week here, I might try out that one too. If not, it will be coming soon at any rate.

We’ll see what happens by Sunday night….all good laid plans of mice and men…..

ALRIGHT ON TO THE CHALLENGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CHALLENGE 1 and GIVEAWAY ONE~

One person will win a signed copy of Denise Rago’s Immortal Obsession. I love this book. Vampires and history and romance. Perfect read. Also, one other person will win an e-book of Guardian of Fate by L.J. Kentowski, a fantasy paranormal that I haven’t read yet, but I have a copy and it looks really good!
