#SpringHorrorRAT Challenge 3! Take the Survey, Win FREE SIGNED COPIES!

I’m going to give a read-a-thon update first, and after you read the rambling, I’ll get to the challenge. (It’s right under the post-it note that says “challenge”). So keep reading and feel free to comment beyond just for challenges.  But comment on it too, to win. We’ve got plenty of fun coming up and great prizes all week long!

Evenings get so filled up by sports, homework, dinner, and Wednesdays are the worst day of them all right now! I filled in some minutes here and there for the Spring into Horror Read-a-Thon with Tweeting about it and publicizing my challenges, not to mention coordinating and writing these blogs. The other spare minutes I’ve been reading on a horror book that is in its editing stages at request of the author (the secret one that is sooooo good, I can’t wait for it to be published) and late last night I almost got finished with Frozen in Time by Marie Symeou (the vampire + mythical Gods novel).

My kids are so funny. I usually let them participate along with me with read-a-thons, but this one I didn’t let on about very much since it was horror. My son saw it on Facebook and they are hearing me talk about it and wanted in on it. At least Emma did. I don’t know why I didn’t think about some books appropriate for her. She is only 8, but she does read Jr. High level and just finished Hunger Games.  She decided to read The Girl Behind the Glass, by Jane Kelley, which is YA about a ghost girl. And she was already reading one of the School of Fear books. There we go. She can’t enter anything, but she just does it to join in the fun. And today, I read a book to my 4-year-old called The Bake Shop Ghost, by Jacqueline K. Ogburn, which was a really cute book about a dead bakery owner who causes lots of trouble over cake.

Yesterday’s Challenge 2 was LIST AS MANY STEPHEN KING BOOKS AS YOU OWN. To recap, you have until Sunday at 11:59 p.m. to finish this challenge, but the sooner the better so you can do the next challenges.

Here is the link to Challenge 2: https://hookofabook.wordpress.com/2012/04/25/springhorrorrat-challenge-2-how-many-can-you-list-to-win-the-sorrows-by-jonathan-janz/.

To the winner, Jonathan Janz is giving away The Sorrows. For those of you who want to participate, but don’t have a huge list of Stephen King books, if you list any books you have or talk about a few favorites, I’ll randomly choose one of you to receive Just After Sunset hardback from me. See the post for details.

THURSDAY’S CHALLENGE~

We want to hear from you.  We all love certain types of horror and it’s becoming such a broad category that we want to know your thoughts. So you’re going to take a torturous quiz upside down while undergoing chinese water torture. Kidding!!!

CHALLENGE SURVEY:

All you have to do is take this survey. The questions are here below and you will post them with answers onto your blog (or wherever works for you) and then link back to your blog or location under this post. Or leave the answers in the comments section. You’ll get +1 entry for each question answered.

SURVEY QUESTIONS:

1.) What do you define HORROR genre as?

2.) What is your favorite sub-genre of HORROR (paranormal, devil/death, supernatural, blood and gore, etc.)

3.) What do you want to see more from writers in the HORROR field?

4.) Favorite HORROR movie and why?

5.) Favorite HORROR authors and why?

6.) What other elements do you like in your HORROR books (mystery, thriller, romance, historical, etc.)?

7.) What is you favorite HORROR book of all time?

8.) What do you like most about this Spring into Horror read-a-thon?

9.) Why do you think people read HORROR?

10.) Your favorite name of a character in a HORROR book?

EXTRA ENTRIES:

You’ll get +1 extra entry to follow me on Twitter at @ErinAlMehairi, if you haven’t yet.

You’ll get +1 for tweeting this challenge.

You’ll get +1 for tweeting Challenge 2, again.

You’ll get +1 for mentioning me on Twitter.

You’ll get +1 for following my blog by email (go to homepage and to the right above, you should see where to do it).

Add me to GoodReads for +1.

Follow Immortal Obession @DeniseKRago on Twitter for +1.

Follow Forest of Shadows author @HunterShea1 on Twitter for +1.

Please don’t forget to tell me what of the extras you did in your comments post to be eligible to get all the extras. And let me know which book you prefer to put entries in for, or tell me how many entries you want into which ones.

This is a GREAT giveaway. Denise Rago’s Immortal Obsession is one of the best historical vampire romances I’ve ever read. You can see her books here: www.denisekrago.com. This is a signed paperback.

Hunter Shea is an amazing horror author published with Samhain Horror and you won’t want to miss out on this signed paperback either. For more info on him go to: www.huntershea.com.

The same rules apply as before, U.S. mailing only for paperbacks, unless you contact me for arrangements. This challenge is open until Sunday at 11:59 p.m., but I suggest doing them sooner rather than later as there is one coming up each day. Hopefully, this lets you be flexible with time.

Any questions, just leave me a note in the comments, on Twitter, or contact me!!

#SpringHorrorRAT Challenge 2!! How many can you list to win The SORROWS by Jonathan Janz?

Are you all having fun with the read-a-thon? Getting some pages under your bookmark (haha…you know, like items under your belt). Anyway…..I have another challenge. I will try to post a mini-challenge every day. The last challenge was a one-day only challenge. With the rest of them, I’ll post the challege each day and participants can have until Sunday at 11:59 p.m. to enter any of them and all of them. That way you can do them when you have time or over the weekend!! Does that sound like a better idea?

WEDNESDAYS CHALLENGE~

Since this is a read-a-thon for SCARY-themed books, and in honor of me checking out Stephen King’s newest novel The Wind Through the Keyhole, let’s do one about scary books by the master himself!

Check your bookshelf (that can be a combination of physical bookshelves throughout your house, GoodReads or Shelfari shelf, Kindle or Nook shelf, etc.) and SEE WHO CAN LIST THE MOST AMOUNT of STEPHEN KING BOOKS. You have to own some version of any book to list it. Then star the ones you’ve already read on your list. For fun, double star your favorite. Whoever ends up with the most wins! If there is a tie, I will do a tie breaker.

You can list these on your blog and then paste the link in the comments under this blog. If you don’t blog, you can list them in the comments.  You’ll get 5 entries for that. For any people who have starred over 10 of them, you get +2 extra entries.

If you follow me on Twitter @ErinAlMehairi, you get +2 extra entries (new followers only). If you tweet this contest, you get +2 more entries. ANOTHER +2 for following @jonathanjanz on Twitter.

If you follow my blog, you get +2 extra entries (new followers only). You can do this by going to the home page and signing-up to receive my blog by email. Or if you already follow, you can like this post for +2.

You get +2 points also if you follow me on GoodReads (http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/4763588-erin-al-mehairi).

So what’s the prize?? ENTER to WIN a SIGNED copy of The Sorrows, by Jonathan Janz. See previous post for information on this book, but it’s worth it. Published by Samhain Horror, it’s a creepy old tale with explicit talk (just warning you) and evil deeds. I’ve read it and I really liked it. It’s one of those old tales with a modern twist.

For everyone else, I will randomly select from anyone who tries to do the challenge (and extras apply for more entries) so that you don’t feel left out from not having a long list. That random person will win Stephen King’s Just After Sunset, courtesy of ME! 🙂 If you have it already, just let me know to take you out of drawing.

Any questions, @ me on Twitter with hashtag #SpringHorrorRAT (and talk it up to me with that too) or leave a comment below in the comments section.

This contest runs until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, April 29 so you have plenty of time to do it and all the others.

Same rules apply: Must be a signed-up member of Spring into Horror Read-a-Thon at Castle Macabre. Print books only mail to U.S. so only U.S. participants can enter for this one.

Happy Reading!

What I am Reading and Challenge 1 for Spring into Horror Read-a-Thon #SpringHorrorRAT

So I’ve done a few posts about the Spring into Horror Read-a-Thon already, but haven’t even got up my own starting line post yet (which for newbies is a post where after you sign-in and begin your participation you talk about what you’ll be reading during the week)! Really, WAY too many choices for me to choose from and no way I can read them all in a week, no matter how hard I cross my arms, blink, and toss my ponytail over my head ala Dream of Jennie. I’ve got the ponytail, but not the powers.

So we’ve got my own starting line post combined with the TUESDAY READ-A-THON CHALLENGE. You’ll have to read through my ramblings to get to the challenge portion. 🙂 A two for one deal.

Sooooo…right now I’m halfway through a book called Frozen in Time by Marie Symeou. It is in the genre of vampire too, but the foundation of the book is historical in nature, with themes of the Greek Gods and Goddesses, reincarnation, etc. The beginning to me justifies as being scary, because the vampire demon-type lady has a curse on her from a Goddess that makes her eat in a very nasty way things that you don’t want to read about being eaten. That scared me. Plus I have to finish it. And there are vampires…

I am also reading a horror book that is in the editing stages so I can’t talk about that one. Bummer, because it is so good and I can’t wait to tell you about it later in the year. So I am wadding up my sheets in my sleep in the meantime…. 🙂

I started Shadows of Night, Deborah Harkness’ second in her series after Discovery of Witches. Very witchy, very appropriate. Vampires, witches, daemons…I’m reading for review to publisher but I am also enjoying very much (and making too slow of progress I must say).

I am going to also read The Taker by Alma Katsu. I am reading a lot to support authors and do reviews, so this book is for me to read out of enjoyment. If you haven’t heard of this book, it’s not quite horror, but there are immortals and paranormal beings and it’s got a gothic overtone. So I hope it applies. I’ve been waiting awhile to sink into it.

And finally, I just received Hunter Shea’s newest Evil Eternal, which I am going to read for review. Since its horror week here, I might try out that one too. If not, it will be coming soon at any rate.

We’ll see what happens by Sunday night….all good laid plans of mice and men…..

ALRIGHT ON TO THE CHALLENGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CHALLENGE 1 and GIVEAWAY ONE~

I told you what I was reading, now you tell me for a chance to win!! This first challenge is just as simple as that.

1.)  On TUESDAY from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. EST, post on your blog, or where you are posting (GoodReads, etc.), at least one book you’re reading and why you chose it! Maybe you already did this in your starting post; if so, feel free to use it with any edits needed.

2.)  In addition to telling me about the book, link back to MY blog on your blog in that post telling everyone you are doing this challenge here. Then come to my blog under this post for this challenge and leave a link to your post with a comment, in my comments section. If you don’t have a blog you can just leave this information for me in the comments.  If you don’t understand, just leave me a comment. You’ll get entered 2 times by doing this.

3.)  Follow my blog via email. You can do this on my homepage by clicking on the link. You’ll receive my blog posts via email and we’ll keep connected. You’ll get 2 extra entries for that.

4.) Please follow me on Twitter, if you are on Twitter. I am @ErinAlMehairi. Leave that in the comment as well (that you followed and with what Twitter name. You’ll get 2 extra entries for that.

5.) If you Tweet about this Challenge, I’ll give you 2 extra points. Leave your tweet link in the comments too.

6.) Tell me if you rather apply for one or the other book if you prefer paperback or ebook. If you don’t care, I will put you in at one entry each for each part you complete. If you prefer one over the other I’ll put you in twice for that one, for each part you complete.

One person will win a signed copy of Denise Rago’s Immortal Obsession. I love this book. Vampires and history and romance. Perfect read. Also, one other person will win an e-book of Guardian of Fate by L.J. Kentowski, a fantasy paranormal that I haven’t read yet, but I have a copy and it looks really good!

RULES: You have to do the challenge as above. This is open for U.S. participants only for the paperback mailing and open to everyone for the e-book. You must be a signed-in participant at Castle Macabre (see former posts if you’re not signed in).

I look forward to your posts!! Have fun!

OOOOOOOO….it’s almost here!! The Spring into Horror Read-a-Thon hosted by my book blogger friend Michelle, otherwise known as “True Book Addict,” at her blog Castle Macabre! It’s starts midnight of April 23 (CST) and runs until 4/29, 11:59 p.m.

My blog (YEP, right here) will be a site to stop by during the week for fun and giveaways while you participate in the read-a-thon. It’s a very LOW STRESS read-a-thon, but make time for reading and lots of fun. You have to read at least one scary book, but you have a week to do it and it can be paranormal, mystery, etc. Read more if you can, we all like to push ourselves to read a little more by having a challenge. 😉 And there will be lots of social time to talk to others about books, so use the Twitter hashtag of SpringHorrorRAT to talk to everyone else. You don’t even have to like horror….it can be scary, paranormal, vampire, fantasy….we love it all! I’ll be using it, introduce yourself!!

For my activities and giveaways, you must at least be a signed-up participant at Castle Macabre (go to the link to her blog and sign-up). The link will be below in the info here or you can get to it by clicking on the right side graphic of my blog home page. Otherwise, just follow what I say in the posts each day there is an activity or giveaway. There might be a short thing to do and then you can sign-up to win wonderful books, both paperback and e-book!!

My author friends will be giving away signed novels!! Watch for  Denise Rago (vampire novel, Immortal Obsession), Brian Moreland (horror supernatural suspense novel, Dead of Winter), Jonathan Janz (horror suspense novel, The Sorrows), Keith Rommel (horror novel, The Cursed Man) and more!! I hope you can participate and I wish you luck. Make some hot tea, grab some chocolate, climb in bed, and lock your door….then get out your scary book each night (and your laptop, KindleFire, Ipad or smartphone so you can network with us…lol). Try not to bite your nails too much. 😉 I don’t want to be responsible for any trips to the ER.

Any questions, just leave them for me in the comments below!!

INFO ON THE SPRING INTO HORROR READ-A-THON

~From Castle Macabre Blog……

Quick link to sign-up: http://castlemacabre.blogspot.com/2012/03/announcing-spring-into-horror-read.html or read on…

From Michelle:  “It’s coming…to shake up your peaceful spring. The Spring into Horror Read-a-Thon starts 4/23 at 12 a.m. CST to 4/29 at 11:59 p.m. CST (adjust times accordingly). Don’t let the word ‘horror’ scare you away from this read-a-thon. You do have to read at least one scary book during the duration of the read-a-thon. That book can be horror, paranormal, thriller, mystery, etc. Then, read whatever you want. More horror/scary stuff or just your regular reading repertoire. As always, this is a week long read-a-thon, but you can join in and read whenever it’s convenient for you. It’s all about being laid back and getting some reading done with a little bit of scary thrown in.

I want to do this read-a-thon a bit differently this time with more focus on the reading and less on mini-challenges. Many people who joined my previous read-a-thons have expressed a desire to focus more on the reading and I’m of a like mind.

You do not have to have a blog. You can sign up using your Goodreads, Twitter, or Facebook accounts. We will be tweeting during the read-a-thon at #SpringHorrorRAT. There will be a starting line post for you to sign-in when you start reading for the read-a-thon, whether you start at the beginning, the middle, or towards the end. For all the info and to sign up, visit the blog post here: http://castlemacabre.blogspot.com/2012/03/announcing-spring-into-horror-read.html.”

Hope to see you there, and HERE!! 🙂
